Simhachalam Temple ( सिंहाचलम मंदिर )

सिंहाचलम मंदिर, विशाखापट्‍टनम(आंध्र प्रदेश)

श्री हरि के चौथे अवतार भगवान नरसिंह को समर्पित है आंध्र प्रदेश के विशाखापट्टनम में स्थित सिंहाचलम मंदिर। वैसे तो भगवान नरसिंह के कई मंदिर भारत में हैं। लेकिन इस मंदिर को उनका निवास स्थान माना जाता है और यह कहा जाता है कि इसका निर्माण स्वयं प्रह्लाद ने करवाया था।

रखरखाव के अभाव में मंदिर अपनी स्थापना के सदियों बाद धरती में समा गया। इस मंदिर के दोबारा अस्तित्व में आने की घटना का वर्णन स्थल पुराण में है। लुनार वंश के राजा पुरुरवा अपनी पत्नी उर्वशी के साथ अपने विमान में बैठकर कहीं जा रहे थे। लेकिन किसी अदृश्य शक्ति के प्रभाव में आकर उनका विमान सिंहाचल पर्वत पर पहुँच गया और देववाणी से प्रेरित होकर उन्होंने धरती के अंदर से भगवान नरसिंह की यह प्रतिमा बाहर निकाली और देववाणी के आदेशानुसार उस प्रतिमा को चंदन के लेप से ढँक कर पुनःस्थापित कराया। उसी देववाणी के द्वारा यह आदेश दिया गया कि वर्ष में एक ही बार यह चंदन का लेप भगवान नरसिंह की प्रतिमा से हटाया जाएगा।

राजा पुरुरवा को जो आदेश हुआ था, उसका पालन आज भी मंदिर में होता है। मुख्य प्रतिमा चंदन के लेप से ढँकी हुई है और साल में एक बार ही अक्षय तृतीया के दिन यह चंदन का लेप हटाया जाता है। यही वह दिन है जब भक्त अपने भगवान की मूल प्रतिमा का दर्शन प्राप्त कर पाते हैं। जिस दिन चंदन का लेप प्रतिमा से हटाया जाता है उसे चंदनोत्सवम के रूप में मनाया जाता है।

 The Simhachalam temple in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh is dedicated to Lord Narasimha, the fourth incarnation of Sri Hari. By the way, there are many temples of Lord Narasimha in India. But this temple is believed to be his abode and it is said to have been built by Prahlad himself.

 Due to lack of maintenance, the temple got buried in the earth centuries after its establishment. The story of the revival of this temple is described in the Sthal Purana. King Pururava of the Lunar dynasty was going somewhere in his plane with his wife Urvashi. But under the influence of some invisible power, his plane reached Sinhachal mountain and inspired by Devvani, he took out this idol of Lord Narasimha from inside the earth and as per the order of Devvani, that statue was restored by covering it with sandalwood paste. It was ordered by the same Devvani that this sandalwood paste would be removed from the idol of Lord Narasimha only once in a year.

 The order that was given to King Pururava, is followed in the temple even today. The main idol is covered with sandalwood paste and this sandalwood paste is removed only once a year on Akshaya Tritiya. This is the day when the devotees get to see the original idol of their Lord. The day the sandalwood paste is removed from the idol is celebrated as Chandanotsavam.
